Screen shot of me on Portland Media Center’s “Friday PM” show on Channel 5, describing May’s astrology (pre-taped on May 2 for their May 9 broadcast).

My recent conversation with Luigi Scarcelli took a few detours, but is still a fun and informative way to get a sense of this month’s big astrological movements. If you enjoy video, you’re welcome to watch the interview here. If you prefer to read your astrology, below are the main highlights.

If you’d like to understand better how this month’s major astrological events are interacting with your birth chart and whether they’re activating any of your significant life patterns, please get in touch about a consultation!

May 2025: Earth and Fire

We’re in the heart of Taurus season! Taurus is an earth sign, ruled by Venus: great for taking time to focus on gardening, enjoying all five physical senses, beautiful art and nice things. Yet we also have some planets clustering in fire signs. So you might be noticing that you feel more energized and motivated to take action (unless you’re obsessed with doom-scrolling on social media).

At the time the video aired, Mercury was about to move from Aries to Taurus on May 10. This describes going from a very active/impulsive mental tone and communication environment, to a more steady mental pace. You might find it easier to focus on one thing at a time.

Mars, the planet of action, desire, libido, and aggression is in Leo all month: a fiery planet in a fiery sign. Go after what you want, tap into courage and do the thing that scares you anyway! Just keep tabs on pride and ego (both yours and that of others). Leo is a sign related to compassion and generosity, which are as precious as gold these days.

Venus, the planet of love, is in Aries. It’s lighting a fire under active forms of attracting who and what you want. Venus tends to express as a lustier, more direct version of herself in Aries — much less passive. So you might need to remember to make and hold space for what you desire to arrive after you’ve made contact or taken the first step toward an intention.

Pretty much all the major planets are in direct motion, and will be for a solid couple of months until mid-July. Woohoo!

The one exception is Pluto, which stationed retrograde on May 4. Pluto spends a lot of time retrograde, so I don’t usually focus on its back-and-forth too much, unless circumstances warrant it. (And sometimes they very much do.)

Having all the major planets except Pluto in direct motion indicates that May through June is a GREAT time to really move projects forward. Take steps toward goals, untangle anything that got gnarly during March/April, and see if you can make some tangible progress in areas that have seemed resistant recently.

A few additional highlights this month:

May 10 — Mercury enters Taurus.

May 12 — Scorpio Full Moon. This is a significant energy peak, and is drawing in some unpredictable (and possibly inspirational) energy from Uranus in Taurus. Move projects forward steadily but watch for stubbornness and getting attached to one way of doing things. Pay attention to how physical sensations may be indicative of underlying emotions, and be willing to investigate them.

May 20 — Sun enters Gemini, the first sign ruled by Mercury. Expect communication to pick up pace, and a very social vibe through the rest of the month into June.

May 24 — Saturn enters Aries for a visit until September. This shifts the tone of where we need to do the most work, step into authority, or be more disciplined. Saturn also offers a steadying influence on all the fiery ambition and impulse of the month.

May 26 — Gemini New Moon (conjunct Mercury). Lots of air and fire energy in this New Moon! Air is a key ingredient in fanning flames. What are your top two biggest ideas or inspirations heading into June? Can you buddy up with someone for some productive mutual support? Feed each other’s flames to prevent mental burnout & stay grounded.

We don’t have many planets in earth and water signs in late May. This could indicate a need to make a more conscious, repeated effort to refill the well, remember empathy, and feel (rather than just think and act). Don’t give in to the lie of digital life: we’re not all just electronic impulses, data points, or a bunch of ones and zeroes. Get offline, get in physical contact with others, and let your heart feel the hearts of others.

Our humanity is crucial. When Jupiter leaves cerebral and verbal Gemini for emotional, sensitive Cancer on June 9, we may feel this even more keenly than usual.

With love,

Amanda
