Still waters, not stagnant…
Scorpio flow on Long Mountain in Maine; both photos by Amanda Painter.

A week or two ago when I was first looking at the chart for today’s New Moon in Scorpio, my mind was leaping with half-thought associations between all its intriguing pieces. Although the opposition between Mars in Cancer and Pluto in Capricorn is a major feature — speaking of a potentially uncomfortable power dynamic — those planets are within orb of several other objects late in degrees that seem to connect this energy to some dynamic flow and opportunity.

Most notable of these is a grand water trine connecting Mars with Mercury in Scorpio and Neptune in Pisces, offering some flow to take the pressure off the Mars-Pluto opposition. (My Astrophile Substack colleague Amanda Moreno has offered some very perceptive thoughts about this New Moon in our fraught global cultural context and U.S. political moment.) Also within orb of Mars-Pluto are Uranus in Taurus, Juno in Libra, and Eris in Aries.

Yet one of the things that caught my attention most while writing these horoscopes was a pair of asteroids in Leo, which are square the New Moon: Varuna and Karma. According to Alex Miller, Varuna relates to oaths, law and order, long-term maintenance of the social structure, one’s lasting legacy, and the sea. Karma is pretty self-explanatory: the consequences of one’s actions, reaping what you sow, the balance of what you put out into the world and what you receive.

Those themes, pushing against a Sun-Moon conjunction that is otherwise barely* aspected by any major planets, stand out to me as key to using the full transformative power of this Scorpio New Moon. There is something important here about keeping good-faith oaths, consideration of our legacy, facing current consequences of past actions, and forethought about how our actions now — or lack thereof — may come back to us.

I wish you many blessings for this New Moon, and for whatever you may be in the process of transmuting in the embrace of Scorpio’s dark waters. May the process serve your healing and growth, and the highest good of all.

With love,

Amanda

*(Saturn is roughly trine from Pisces, offering some spiritual discipline and structure, while centaur Pholus is sextile from Capricorn, describing a potential ripple effect to what you begin now.)

Scorpio New Moon Horoscopes for Nov. 1, 2024

ARIES — Bedrooms and bank vaults have more in common than we care to admit: both places are private, and both are associated with power and transactions — whether emotional, sexual, or financial. The zone of your chart representing these themes is hosting the New Moon. This offers you an opportunity to reset how you’re navigating a situation that’s very intertwined with another person (even if money and sex are not part of the equation). Although your natural tendency might be to hold tightly to an idea of how this should go, or even to keep your strongest feelings about it secret, bear in mind the law of cause and effect. Your situation is rooted in the past, and present choices will influence its future. Therefore, the more precise your thinking and communication about it, the greater your potential to unstick what’s gotten stuck. If something’s been irritating your sense of security — and if that, in turn, is undermining your greater ambitions in life — all the more reason to get clear on it. Then you can take uncompromised action.

TAURUS — Consider the most prominent themes in your primary intimate relationship or a platonic partnership (including one just beginning now). It looks like the next phase of this relationship hinges on the consequences of past actions that you’ve taken in an effort to feel more secure. Or perhaps you were looking for a new balance between giving and receiving? Either way, you may now be exploring a broader perspective on how to get strategic with shared resources. It looks like doing so could actually help liberate your generosity around what’s solely “yours,” and unlock some luck or previously untapped support. Yet be mindful of your promises and agreements, whether you’re making new ones or revisiting one from the past. An apparent lack of concern or strong emotions from the other person is not a free pass to ignore the terms you’ve set. It’s a reminder to check your intentions regarding the arrangement. Your automatic reactions to any challenging encounters also offer an important barometer this week.

GEMINI — As much as you may live in your head sometimes, and despite how agile your mind is, your emotions still have a huge influence on your mental and physical health. This can be especially true of emotions related to your workplace and the relationships you have there. Note also that the words you use can have unconscious consequences for how you feel — and how you feel impacts how your mind works. It’s not a completely closed loop, however, and there are ways to break the circuit from either end if you need to shift into healthier patterns. This New Moon, you have an opportunity to think deeply about what your day-to-day has been like this year. If it’s time to flush those pipelines with some fresh water (read: new ideas and habits), you’ll be supported. It’ll also impact a daisy chain connecting your most enmeshed relationships with your career goals or options, and may even wiggle something loose in your unconscious. Getting still enough to sense what’s hiding at the core of your current train of thoughts or a health issue is the first step.

CANCER — You appear strongly focused right now on enjoying life and being fully yourself, with some excess energy to vent. This New Moon is asking you to consider consciously how you balance your idea of fun with the laws of karma. That is: what goes around comes around. It seems that some of your “authentic self-expression” is meeting strong pushback from someone. What is their objection? Are you in a power struggle with an authority figure or “enemy”? Or is this simply a reality check on the impact your impulses are having on a partner (romantic or platonic)? Assuming that you’re not on the receiving end in an abusive relationship (in which case, please get help), a little introspection around what you truly want from the situation could yield a more productive way to express it. Knowing yourself better is always a surefire way to have more fun with those closest to you. If you’re cooking up some creative “brain child” behind the scenes, you’ll likely want this person on your team when you finally reveal it.

LEO — Your family or household, and even your actual home, are a strong focus this month. If everything in those realms is flowing well, get comfy and enjoy it. Yet it may be worth checking the drains: both the literal plumbing, and your most personally relevant emotional outlets. Does anything need to be unclogged or opened up for greater capacity? Consider that you are the living legacy of all your past choices. Some are celebrated and built upon; some grieved but still learned from. And other experiences get tucked away for future processing. Shining your considerable light inward during this New Moon (and perhaps most of the month) will give you an opportunity to flush the pipes of your psyche. What you discover could go a long way toward supporting beneficial changes in your daily work and long-range goals. This further opens the channels through which what you do can benefit the wider world.

VIRGO — Your mind has likely been operating at a peak the last few weeks. Yet with the natural dip in energy that comes with a New Moon, you’re finally getting a chance to catch up with yourself. Take it. Something is being transformed. This might be some facet of your immediate environment, as a result of your focused mental efforts. Or maybe your thought patterns themselves are regenerating. Though the process has been largely hidden from others, it is showing through what (and how) you’re communicating. You are merely reaping the benefits of what you have sown, though the initiatory actions may be too long ago to pinpoint. Take a moment to recognize how the evolution of what you consider “fun” relates to your recent partners in creativity. Certain spiritual breakthroughs you’ve experienced, and the ways you serve the world beyond your immediate social circles, are also connected. Seeds you’re planting now may grow slowly, but their fruit will be juicy.

LIBRA — “Regeneration” is an interesting term. The “generation” part is comfortable enough, because it means creating something new. But add that prefix “re,” and suddenly loss is implied: making something again that had gone missing. Yet the word’s origins are actually theological, describing radical spiritual change and a rebirth. This New Moon is an opportunity for you to begin shifting your spiritual-emotional relationship to something you value highly — something you tend to guard or grasp tightly out of fear of losing it. Is that literal money and material resources in your case? Or maybe your skills or values? Your need to reconstruct what “security” means to you may seem to be at odds with your more worldly ambitions. But you are the point of integration between the two. To find the right balance, keep leaning into your creative potential with partners and allies, and fear of loss should fade.

SCORPIO — Over the last few years, it’s likely that people and events out of your control have repeatedly challenged your sense of who you are. This kind of internal rearrangement, provoked by external circumstances, can feel especially disorienting. Luckily the New Moon in your sign describes an opportunity to draw yourself together — like how the many streams of an inland watershed collect in a lake. Suddenly, what had been rushing and scattered becomes still and unified, though its foundation may be less visible. To investigate those depths like a scuba diver (but with less pressure — that is, fear), consider the way your thoughts tend to shape your spiritual experience. Notice how your immediate environment can affect your frame of mind. Then try it in the opposite direction: notice which practices designed to expand consciousness offer helpful perspective on your current situation. Those that empower you to seek to affect the world positively, and to manage disappointments when you think you (or others) have come up short, have potential in your long-term growth.

SAGITTARIUS — Do you ever feel like the Creature from the Black Lagoon is hiding out in your unconscious? You’re brilliantly perceptive about the vast universe around you. Yet sometimes your unprocessed emotional residue causes you significant difficulty. To understand what’s in there in ways that can best further your spiritual growth, consider that everything you experience has a cause in the past — whether that means two days, 20 years, or 200 lifetimes ago. This includes your significant current focus on relationships, and the many benefits you’re receiving from those encounters. That effect should continue for a while longer. However, this New Moon suggests spending some time in a meditative practice. Doing so could help you skirt around mental-level distractions just long enough to feel into an important blind spot. With compassion for what you find there, it might feel more like The Shape of Water: a story of love and curiosity replacing fear of the unknown.

CAPRICORN — Are somebody’s actions challenging, irritating, or motivating you currently? If so, are you ignoring them, or trying to overpower them? Or are they inspiring you to figure out how to harness their energy toward your own goals — or toward a shared mission? I ask because you don’t always enjoy the easiest dynamic with teams and groups. Your strong DIY approach to life has empowered you to be beautifully independent. But you’re not actually alone in this world, and many aspirations in life benefit from the support of friends. With this New Moon you’re being offered an opportunity to regrow some facet of your social life. I think it might have to do with generosity. Not in terms of money or objects, but more like emotional generosity toward the ways others sometimes fail to measure up in your eyes. Identifying a few additional friendly allies who align with your ideals could prove worthwhile in the coming months.

AQUARIUS — Astrologers love describing you as an iconoclast. And yet, you are tremendously loyal to “your people,” whether that means those in your family or household, partners, or professional colleagues. It’s that professional/vocational zone in particular that you’re being asked to focus on this month. As you reflect on your accomplishments this past year and consider your biggest goals for the next twelve months, there seems to be some tension with a partner of some kind. Specifically it looks like you’re aware of a promise you made to someone, and its implications as you pursue your worldly ambitions. These two things need not be mutually exclusive. It may only be a matter of tying up loose ends before pushing forward. You’ve been getting clearer lately on what you value most. These insights have a direct line into this New Moon. Listen closely, even if living your values has become second nature. Your spiritual-moral compass is your dearest resource as you begin this next cycle.

PISCES — No matter what else is going on in your life currently, there’s an especially Piscean circuit flowing in your charts. It connects your trademark idealism and compassion to your creative engine, and to your quest for understanding expansive ideas, experiences, and people. Although New Moons are typically low-energy phases, you would do well to use this one for some exploration. You can do so internally if you prefer. However, consider finding ways to externalize the process — such as by traveling to learn something rather than googling it, or by publishing your discoveries. If consequences of actions related to your wellbeing or daily work feel at odds with your flow, don’t just bypass the situation. I suspect dealing with it holds a key to not only deepening your self-understanding, but also purifying and transfiguring the philosophy by which you perceive the world.

Slightly simplified chart for the Scorpio New Moon. Beginning with the Sun and Moon at 9 Scorpio 35′ and working counter clockwise: Mercury in Scorpio, Venus and Pallas in Sagittarius, Pholus and Pluto in Capricorn, Saturn and Neptune in Pisces, Chiron and Eris in Aries, Uranus in Taurus, Jupiter in Gemini, and Mars in Capricorn.
