Jupiter and the Sun may still be amplifying the gentle waters of Cancer (and I’m certainly honoring them with as much swimming as I can muster), but it’s Mercury and Uranus that seem to be calling the main melody in my life these last two or three weeks. Mercury, which stationed retrograde in mid-Leo at 12:45 am EDT this morning, has been serving up a series of hiccups and reversals since fairly early in its pre-retrograde shadow phase.

A summer field in full glory… Despite the weight of the world, I still find scenes like this enlivening for my heart. Photo by Amanda Painter.

My astro-colleague Gary Caton, who has been tracking correlations between Mercury’s path across the ecliptic and its apparent volatility levels confirmed for me that it made that cross right around then, putting us firmly “in it” at the start of this month.

Uranus, for its part, has so far defied my apprehensions as it made its first foray into quick, mental Gemini (and my 12th house). Rather than feeling scattered and fried, I’m feeling enlivened, and better equipped to juggle the multiple priorities I have on my radar.

My sense is that its relationship to the Saturn-Neptune conjunction in Aries describes the voltage of Uranus receiving some essential stabilization and softening. Meanwhile, Saturn-Neptune is getting a boost to lift its activity out of stolid dissipation. I suspect being in fiery Aries helps with that, too.

The relationship of Uranus to Saturn-Neptune is a sextile: one of supportive opportunity. But it’s the kind of support you have to act on to access.

The benefit of a sextile is not quite a given the same way a trine is — and so YMMV considerably with this configuration. Our life circumstances strongly shape the way these energies play out for us personally.

So if you’re not feelin’ it, you’re not “doing it wrong,” and hopefully the horoscopes below can help you find a way in to using this astrology differently, or at least a way to reframe your experience that’s meaningful and supportive. Goddess knows the world is a pretty fucked up place these days. It can be hard to take that in and still see the bright spots, allow joy, and trust there’s meaning to what you’re doing in your day-to-day.

And then here comes Mercury, stirring up Leo, prodding us to focus our minds back on the true heart of the matter, whatever that may be and however it is showing up in your life, perhaps through glitches and double-takes, revisions and workarounds. Personally, Mercury basically up and slapped me in the face to get my attention last night.

To be sure, I’ve been noticing Mercury’s shadowy radar blips across my zones of possessions, income, values, and priorities (the 2nd house) and thought processes, communication and its related tech, and my local environment (the 3rd house, where Mercury is currently) since early July. (Leo spans my 2nd and 3rd houses.) But last night it got extra personal.

After a busy workday, I went to my favorite local beach for a swim. We’ve been experiencing an unusual number of cold-water jellyfish washing up lately, but last night the beach was clear. It was windy with post-storm waves, so as I swam just past the break, I had to stay hyper-vigilant about my immediate surroundings — both to spot potential jellies, and to be sure the kite-surfer zipping back and forth could see me.

As I neared the end of my swim, the kite-surfer went in. I took the opportunity to finally swim with my face in the water.

Barely a minute or two of that, and ZAP! I felt like I’d just touched an electric fence with my cheek. A frickin’ jelly got me.

A *lion’s mane jelly.*

With Mercury standing still in the middle of Leo.

Very funny, Mercury… very funny.

Thank you for the reminder not to let my awareness lapse or let my thinking get sloppy! I have a lot to stay aware of if I want to keep some momentum without getting overwhelmed.

I hope any recent wake-up calls of your own have stung less but are equally effective at keeping you present. This world needs your gifts and your light, shared from a heart that still has space to receive.

With love,

Amanda

Horoscopes for Mercury Retrograde & Uranus in Gemini

ARIES — Have you heard the saying, “First thought, best thought”? While this may be true most of the time, at least in terms of instinctual or intuitive responses, I suspect you’ve had at least one experience in the last couple weeks where your second thought actually held the pot of gold. If it didn’t throw you, it was probably fun. Consider it a hint that you’re going through a phase of review and reevaluation of the creative ideas you most like to play with. Brain candy can be a real treat. But sometimes you need something more nourishing — such as the truth of who you are, or a desire to be of genuine service — to feed a worthwhile brainchild. Right now your immediate surroundings and the people in them have the potential to light you up the brightest, even if they frequently seem to throw a wrench in the works. Let each disruption motivate you toward more nimble thinking (while also listening fully to those around you). Specifically, this mental flexibility offers a way into a deeper process of self-understanding you’re engaged with. Your willingness to work with unexpected insights brings key opportunities now.

TAURUS — No matter what your home life was like growing up, on some level you know it’s possible to update your files on what it means to feel “at home” as an adult. Yet isn’t always easy. In fact, you’re probably hanging on to some emotional habits in that realm, perhaps out of an early childhood sense of loyalty modeled by a parent. Right now you’re receiving a brilliant opportunity to review and revise this material. Something in your unconscious is offering a lifeline of nurturing. Letting it in may simply be a matter of learning not to argue against it out of stubbornness, though that takes practice. Luckily your keen sense of values is aiding and abetting this reconnaissance and recovery process, though it may at times feel like you’re trying to hold competing principles. Keep working that sensation, allowing yourself the grace to shift priorities on the fly. The area of your psyche that relates to your earning potential is being animated like you’ve got electrodes hooked up to it. This is bringing to life something in your subconscious that is ready to be put to work for your highest good. Writing or talking it out could help create a container where you can see it for what it is.

GEMINI — You recently began a six- or seven-year phase of self-reinvention. Does it feel exhilarating, terrifying, dissociating? There will likely be phases of this process that are quite intense, and times when it recedes into the background. Either way, the more consciously you can engage in this undertaking the more enlivening it should feel. Just remember that you don’t have to hold it all in your head! Use your words to communicate what you’re experiencing so those around you can support the process rather than get in the way. Right now you have a golden opportunity to channel this energy into restructuring your wider social networks so they can better support your dreams. That sounds grandiose, so let’s break it down: you get by with a little help from your friends — and sometimes from **their** friends, too. It may take effort. That doesn’t equal “impossible,” even if you’re an introvert or your friend circle has shrunk. It’s time to review the ways your surroundings have molded your thinking, for better or for worse, and allow people further afield to nourish and light you up. You deserve it — and the world deserves your forthcoming genius.

CANCER — The most hidden parts of your psyche — the corners you can’t see around even with a flashlight — have just been ignited as if by lightning. Are you feeling overwhelmed? Or alive and thrillingly on fire? Either situation is possible; both have the same opportunity currently to use the energy constructively. As I see it, the key is to channel whatever instincts and intuition you’re experiencing into your highest aspirations — and your responsibility toward them. Claiming ownership of your dreams means doing the work needed to get there. So if you’re feeling focused and dedicated, lean into that. And if you’re feeling like your mind keeps interrupting itself, or everything you try to do explodes apart, take a closer look at these signals. They’re a trail of breadcrumbs you can follow to get clearer on some way that you may be working against yourself by ignoring a deep need, desire, or other unresolved material. It’s okay to get help with this process. In fact, you’ve just begun a phase of reviewing your resources, in all senses of the word. Someone in your professional realm is offering sustenance as you rediscover the gold nuggets you already possess.

LEO — Let me guess: you thought you had yourself all figured out, but lately you’ve been reconsidering whether you’ve been articulating “the real you” all this time? Or maybe you can’t seem to say what you mean and be understood? Don’t fret. You haven’t been wrong about who you are, and you’ve been representing yourself accurately. But the people you’re encountering these days are insisting you be even more real with them. Luckily the social situations that are currently most inspiring to you serve a subtle double purpose beyond just being your stage on which to perform. They’re also connecting you to the very frameworks or disciplines that will help you deepen your understanding of the world (particularly the world within). But you’ll need to work this opportunity. And it may at times mean accessing some humility to receive the full nourishing power of this self-knowledge, as you reassess who you are and how you shine that out. Worthwhile horizons await as you reinvent your sense of community.

VIRGO — If you’re feeling somewhat turned inside out, you’re not wrong. Yet it’s also something of an optical illusion, like those pictures that show a different image depending on whether you’re looking at the positive or negative space. No matter how hard you focus on the negative space, you’ll never see the image in the positive space until you shift your focus. That requires relaxing your gaze — something your analytical mind tends to resist. This is all a metaphor for reviewing the contents of your unconscious, by the way. To help you stop thinking about the figurative elephant in the room that I’ve just mentioned, switch your attention to the uncanny, out-of-left field goals that have recently emerged; the ones related to your career or higher calling. They’re sparking a new level of dedicated idealism and action regarding shared finances or a similarly intertwined (and private) facet of your life. Doing that work in a way that feeds all involved could go a long way toward revealing a key insight about yourself.

LIBRA — Does it seem that all the important ideas you’ve been keen to share with the world have suddenly been walked back to the drawing board, leaving you to wonder how you can be of use to your community? Don’t worry, it’s a temporary situation. But rather than wait patiently for everyone around you to come to their senses, I recommend getting curious. What are some past impacts of the words you’ve shared publicly? What kind of opportunities do those lessons hold for broadening your understanding of your world (inner and outer) now? I see a brilliant spark of inventiveness firing up the “exploration and questing” zone of your chart. To get the most out of it, you’ll want to engage a partner or friend in your journeying. Be forewarned: this person has their own visions, obligations, and limitations currently. Yet the more actively you can work with those, the greater the potential payoff for both of you — and in turn, for all your other connections. Nourishment begets more nourishment.

SCORPIO — Over the last two weeks, how many times have you dealt with a workaround, detour, or straight-up reversal or reneging in your professional life? Rather than cutting your losses and saying, “fuck it,” are you willing to reconsider these moments more closely or through a different lens? For one, I suspect these events hold a direct line in to a more nurturing approach to your physical and mental health. There’s also an opportunity to receive more than what you’d normally allow yourself from some kind of investment with (or in) another person. Speaking of investments: emotionally, financially, or sexually, you’re getting prodded to wake up and reinvent your approach to merging and surrender. Your foundation for this is the vision you hold for how you’d like your daily work-life balance to look — and your willingness to take disciplined steps toward it. Harness this spark now for maximum revitalization. And remember: building something better always entails letting something go that’s done.

SAGITTARIUS — Who’s that live wire who has shown up in your life this month? Or are there several new people and existing partners of different sorts, each seemingly plugging you in to a different power station? As destabilizing as this could be, I think you’re up for the adventure. Partly this is because you likely have the perfect way to ground all this current: namely, a dream for how you’d like to express yourself and the willingness to work hard for it. There is a certain kind of freedom that comes from knowing the boundaries of your chosen container and then pushing them with clear intention. Conversely, avoiding limits — which really means avoiding commitment — undermines your ability to put your considerable energy and insight fully into the adventure of your life. Note that any creative (or romantic) risks you’re taking are also simultaneously feeding a review process of some kind. Are you updating your spiritual files, revising your worldview, or reconsidering a trip? Whatever it is, seeking input from a friend or partner looks quite beneficial.

CAPRICORN — Do recent misunderstandings or mistakes have you walking back a contract or reevaluating an agreement (business or intimate)? To what degree is this a true change of mind (or heart), and to what degree is it a matter of second-guessing the power dynamic that’s involved? I wouldn’t make any final decisions for a good three weeks or so, if you can help it. In the meantime, gather data: the “hard” kind (facts and figures) as well as the “soft” kind (how you’re feeling at home and at work), and focus on which inputs offer ease and opportunity. You appear to be experiencing an extended “eureka!” moment around your health, wellbeing, and daily activities. In turn, this is infusing your willingness to do some real work around “home.” If you’re already involved in renovating to create your dream house, consider focusing on the psychological sense of “home. Notice especially how your loved ones affect it. Something’s up for an overhaul and modernization there, too. Follow your inspiration on a daily basis, alongside your responsibilities. What takes shape could surprise you with how much better you feel.

AQUARIUS — Does someone in your life seem to be waffling? Or maybe they moved boldly and decisively in one direction, and now just as boldly and decisively reversed gears? Or are **you** the one changing your mind about a friend or partner (or about their ideas)? Whatever static seems to be coming through the airwaves, you might try engaging with it from a place of playfulness or the kind of imaginative “both/and” thinking that kids can be great at. You may find it offers some tasty food for thought, especially if you encounter further glitches. In fact, I’d say you have a ripe opportunity to let your more daring, eccentric impulses for self-expression fuel some serious up-leveling of your thinking. This may require a certain amount of discipline to keep from losing touch with the reality of your surroundings; given the current state of the world, escapism is sorely tempting. But the payoff could be a strengthening of bonds with your neighbors and relations that’s exactly the foundation your dreams for humanity can build on.

PISCES — Are you experiencing a change of heart about being of service to the world? Nah — it’s too much a part of who you are. However, it does appear you may be re-examining what that looks like, especially if your physical or mental health has been sending mixed messages lately. Those messages are important to notice, though their true meaning might take a few weeks to come through clearly. (Even so, do begin taking steps to address them presently.) At the same time, you can trust that your values are like wholesome food for your mind: they’re the thing to lean into if monkey mind starts to take over and wreak havoc on your system, which can be sensitive to your thoughts and the emotions they provoke. Conversely, when you act on your values, you open up your options for the ways (and places) where you feel safe. Having at least two “home bases” helps you alternate between “work” and “rest,” since your creativity tends to stitch them closely together. Follow any urge to reinvent these literal and psychological spaces. This will inspire your efforts to make any dreams of greater income or self-possession a reality.
