Although the astrological calendar does not turn its page until we get to Aries and the equinox in mid/late March, New Year’s Day still carries the symbolism of new starts for many people, though it falls right near the middle of the Sun’s journey through Capricorn: a sign with a strong affinity for traditions and “the old” but also a sign of leadership and ambition.

Jan. 1, 2026, features a few additional planets in this sign, appropriately looking almost like a stack of building blocks to climb, complete with the desire and energy to do so.
Most strikingly, New Year’s Eve and Day are followed closely this year by a Full Moon in Capricorn’s opposite sign, Cancer, on Jan. 3. This means festivities will be resonating with a gradual amplification of energy as this month’s lunar cycle approaches its peak. (New Year’s Eve and Day feature a Gemini Moon, describing a light, social, chatty vibe.)
You may notice feelings climaxing as the Cancer Full Moon approaches its peak at 5:03 am EST on Saturday. Whether that energy comes through as an strong urge to hunker down with family, to take care of business, or to soak up all the feels that a New Year can evoke will vary by individual.
As you arrive at the weekend, pay particular attention to the ways you’re being called to focus on something very foundational to your life, whether internal or external. Observe whether these emotions draw out or reflect back to you a push-me-pull-you sensation: for example, feeling desire for contact with someone (or something) while simultaneously being frustrated with them (or it).
This Full Moon also carries an important message about integrating ambition and receptivity for the best results in the next stage of whatever you’re building — and staying sensitive to how those two qualities cycle and flow between each other.
I have a feeling your awareness of this interplay could be important later in the month. When the Sun and Moon meet in Capricorn for a New Moon on Jan. 18, it continues the story of the last two New Moons quite directly. All three have been in close contact with shocking, awakening, innovative Uranus in Taurus.
Did a disruption to your awareness erupt during the Nov. 20 Scorpio New Moon? And did the Dec. 19 Sagittarius New Moon open a phase of repeatedly adjusting your understanding of that disruption and — listening carefully for feedback?
As you approach and move through the Capricorn New Moon later this month, a new level of ease and integration should open up in relation to whatever process the last two New Moons have been inviting you to keep leveling up. This New Moon on Jan. 18 has a more stable and balanced relationship with Uranus in Taurus.
You might be surprised by how easy it feels at that time to shift into a new gear around what has, thus far, been an unpredictable and perhaps thoroughly disorienting challenge. With Mercury (the mind, communication) and Mars (motivation, action) harmonizing with January’s New Moon tune, solid ideas and the ability to move on them could very well come through.
I’ll be covering an overview of the astrology of 2026 separately. For now, I’ll simply note that there are some significant planetary changes in store. Combined, they describe important shifts in our collective landscape — and in our personal experience of the world and the ways we engage with it.
As always, the more you can cultivate your own inner space, the greater your capacity for grounding, resiliency, and connection with others will be. The more aware you can become of who you are becoming on a deep, soul level, the more fully you can bring forth your incredible gifts to share with this world that so dearly needs all of us working together so all life on this planet can thrive.
With love,
Amanda
